BMU: Svenja Schulze presented her programme for the German EU Council Presidency

Dear colleagues,

today Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze presented her programme for the German EU Council Presidency at the Environment Council. Another issue discussed was social and environmental recovery after the coronavirus crisis.

Federal Environment Minister Schulze commented:

“Our aim is for the EU to emerge from the pandemic crisis stronger than before. To achieve this goal, the recovery must be successful from an environmental and social perspective and the EU must meet the challenges posed by climate change and digitalisation. Three priorities will shape our Council Presidency.

First, the fight against climate change is at the top of our agenda. We will work towards bringing the deliberations of the member states on the European Climate Law to a successful conclusion. The Climate Law sets the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. We also propose adopting an updated European climate target for the Paris Agreement this year.

Second, we want to establish the Council position on the EU Biodiversity Strategy with regard to biodiversity conservation. The Biodiversity Strategy is a core element of the European Green Deal.

Third, we want to introduce a new issue that has not yet been discussed in the Environment Council, namely, digitalisation and environmental protection. This important issue will be addressed in a separate informal video conference of EU environment ministers on 13 and 14 July.”

Best regards

BMU-Team
