Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke commented: “In future, packaging must be recyclable and, as much as possible, reusable. This is envisaged in the Commission proposal for an EU Packaging Regulation presented today, which is good news for environmental protection and climate action. In many areas, the proposed European provisions are already in place in Germany: comprehensive deposit and return systems for drinks packaging or the new reuse system obligation for takeaway that will apply from 1 January 2023. For many years, the amount of packaging waste in Germany has been on the rise. We are reversing the trend with a decisive change of course at European level. Reusable packaging is true waste prevention. The more reusable packaging in circulation in everyday life and in production, the longer packaging will be reused and the less waste will be created. In Germany, we will continue to work on establishing reusable packaging. The new obligation to offer reusable packaging as an option for takeaway is just the first step. Ahead of the European provisions and in coordination with the European Commission, we want to take further steps to transform packaging. For example, mandatory reusable packaging for drinks in retail or a ban on providing dine-in food with disposable dishes and cutlery.”

mit freundlichen Grüßen
