Dear colleagues,
you can quote German state secretary Jochen Flasbarth on yesterday’s declaration as follows:
“It is excellent news that the world’s two largest greenhouse gas emitters, China and the United States, have agreed to cooperate on tackling climate change and stepping up their climate action effort. If we are to limit global heating to 1.5° Celsius, we have to catch up on climate action very quickly during this decade. The advances needed must come first and foremost from the largest emitters. It gives us great hope that China is now also meeting its responsibility and will work with the US to accelerate emissions reduction. Germany has long enjoyed a close cooperation with China on climate action and environmental protection. We would be pleased to play our part in ensuring the greenhouse gas saving is substantial enough to keep us on course for the 1.5° Celsius target.”
Best regards
