EU Presidency: Statement German Environment Minister Schulze to EU budget and recovery package

Ladies and Gentlemen,

dear colleagues,

the German Environment Minister, Svenja Schulze, declares to the EU Council agreement of today:

“With this agreement, the EU is demonstrating its ability to take action. The agreement provides a good foundation for climate action, which we can build on through further legislation. Never before, has so much of an EU budget been allocated to combatting climate change. In addition, we have successfully combined the European strategy for exiting the crisis with climate action and digitalisation. Europe will emerge from this crisis stronger and more climate-friendly than before.
Now it is important that the agreement is effectively implemented in the design of the EU support programmes in order to advance the transition towards a climate neutral economy and society in Europe. The commitments to climate action and environmental protection are important and necessary, but the distribution of funds must reflect that. I will pay attention to this as the implementation process progresses.”
