Ladies and Gentlemen,
German Federal Environment and Consumer Protection Minister Steffi Lemke commented on the EU Taxonomy Complementary Climate Delegated Act, that was published today by the EU-Commission:
“Today's decision by the European Commission is unacceptable. Like many other EU member states, Germany is clearly and unequivocally against the inclusion of nuclear power in the taxonomy. Nuclear power is anything but sustainable, it is risky, too expensive, and the construction and planning processes are too lengthy to contribute to climate neutrality by 2050. Characterising nuclear power as sustainable contradicts the sustainability concept familiar to consumers in Germany and other EU member states. The act adopted by the European Commission is a major mistake that will severely damage the taxonomy as a whole and endanger our climate targets. We need a credible standard of sustainability for the financial markets to effectively prevent greenwashing and to direct necessary investments where we so urgently need them – for the swift expansion of solar and wind power and for a sustainable energy transition. The Commission's decision means that for every additional billion that flows into nuclear power, there will be a billion less available for investments into the transition. For this reason, we need to ensure that the standard for European green bonds, which is currently under negotiation at EU level, will exclude nuclear power.”
