Ladies and Gentlemen,

in the context of recovery plans, Green Deals and the effects of Covid lockdowns, a new report on the uptake of renewable energy in cities around the world was launched tooday:  the 2021 edition of REN21’s Renewables in Cities Global Status Report, the only stock-taking of cities’ energy transition efforts worldwide.

The report shows that:

  • One billion people live in cities with a renewable energy target or policy. The number of cities that have enforced partial or complete bans on fossil fuels jumped fivefold in 2020.
  • More than 800 cities of all sizes representing over 500 million people in over 70 countries had a renewable energy target by the end of 2020, a number that has more than tripled from 2019
  • Roughly 800 municipal governments of all sizes representing 9% of the global population in over 60 countries have net-zero emission targets, a number that has increased eight-fold from 2019.

So cities have a great potential for making considerable impact at scale in favor of the energy transition.

German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze underlines:

„Cities can set the pace for the global race to zero carbon emissions. We need to learn from these front runners, such as Karachi in Pakistan, Lagos in Nigeria and Fuzhou in China. Also in Germany many cities are pioneers in energy and climate issues, with now 140 cities alone promoting specifically solar and wind energy in their urban areas. We need to pave the way for all other cities to follow. This report by REN21 shows us where we stand and how we can reach our destination.”

The The German Federal Environment Ministry is a co-funder of the report.
